Budget Smartwatches Have a New Heavyweight Rival in The Ring

Amazfitโ€™s name may not come up in every discussion, but it has long dominated the affordable smartwatch sector. Now, at CES 2025, the firm hopes to outperform itself with the new $100 Amazfit Active 2.

The Amazfit Active 2 has a new design compared to its predecessor, the Amazfit Active. The most noticeable difference is the new modelโ€™s sleek, circular watch face, which replaces the previous rectangular, Apple Watch-style display.

The regular model has a tempered glass screen, a stainless steel casing, and a 20mm silicone sport band. The premium version features a more durable sapphire glass screen and a leather band for an added sense of luxury.

The Amazfit Active 2 is now available for presale in the United States on the companyโ€™s website, and it will be available worldwide in February via Amazfitโ€™s website and retail partners. The standardย version starts at $100 and comes with either a red or black silicone strap, while the premium model costs $130 and includes a black leather strap as well as a red silicone strap for workouts.

The Amazfit Active 2 features a 1.32-inch AMOLED display with a peak brightness of 2,000 nits. In terms of battery life, it claims up to 10 days of use, which is a good run when compared to watches like the Apple Watch Series 10 or Google Pixel Watch 3, albeit those wearables have more sophisticated functions.

The new smartwatch has the brandโ€™s newest dual-LED 5PD biosensor, which is meant to record more biometric data and enhance accuracy. It also has a barometer to assess altitude and an accelerometer and gyroscope to monitor sleep and movement. The watch even contains an ambient light sensor, which adjusts the display based on your surroundings. It now supports a wider range of activities, including skiing. It has more than 160 different sports modes.

The watch works flawlessly with Amazfitโ€™s recently introduced Helio smart ring, similar to how the Samsung Galaxy Ring improves sensor accuracy when linked with Galaxy Watches.

This smartwatch exceeds expectations by including offline maps with turn-by-turn directions, which is unusual for a device in this price category. You may read the directions on the watch screen or hear them with the built-in speaker.

It also works nicely with the Wild.AI small app, which is specifically developed for tracking womenโ€™s health. This tool allows you to combine menstrual and hormone cycle data with training and recovery information, resulting in a more personalised health experience.

Overall, this new smartwatch appears to be a good value on paper. I mean, itโ€™s unusual to get this sort of feature set for under $250, so the fact that itโ€™s only $100 is quite amazing. For the time being, the Amazfit Active 2 appears to be an excellent pick for anybody looking for a simple smartwatch that isnโ€™t too expensive.
