India Developing Cost-effective AI Models to Compete with ChatGPT and DeepSeek

Artificial intelligence has taken the world by storm, with LLMs (Large Language Models) being quite popular due to their broad capabilities. ChatGPT is an excellent example of an AI model, as are future disruptive models such as Chinaโ€™s DeepSeek. However, it looks that India intends to compete with them with its own AI model, which might be released as early as this year.

Indian Govt to soon launch an affordable AI model

At a recent AI event, Ashwini Vaishnaw, the Union Minister of Electronics and Information Technology, revealed that India is developing its own fundamental AI model. The minister also stated that this will operate similarly to DeepSeek and ChatGPT but at a lower development cost. According to a government official, the new AI model might

Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted during the Indian AI Mission event that academics in India are constructing an AI ecosystem framework to enable its own fundamental AI model. This is being developed to provide an experience specific to Indian users. It would also grasp the language and contextual demands of Indian consumers, promoting inclusion and reducing prejudices.

The Union Minister of Electronics and Information Technology also discussed Indiaโ€™s computing strength, noting that the domestic AI model is being created using a computational center that utilizes 18,693 GPUs. To recall, ChatGPT was trained with around 25,000 GPUs, whereas DeepSeek was trained with 2,000 GPUs.

Indiaโ€™s AI model might cost merely Rs 100 (approximately $1.15) per hour owing to government subsidies, compared to the $3 cost of a typical popular AI model like ChatGPT. Additionally, this announcement follows the discovery by UC Berkeley researchers that DeepSeek AI can be replicated for about $30.
