Realme 14 Pro+ Review

Realme 14 Pro+ Review: Pros and Cons

Cameras have always been a theme in realmeโ€™s number series. Do you recall the realme 9 Pro+? Since I possessed one, I can speak from firsthand experience when I say that it introduced the IMX766 sensor with OIS to the market first. With the 10 Pro+ and 11 Pro+, however, realme kind of lost steam.

In the future, the realme 12 Pro+ was a periscope camera that cost more, akin to a return tour. And with the 13 Pro+ and now the 14 Pro+, that trend persisted. Here we are, three years after the 9 Pro+.

What is going on with the 14 Pro+? Good hardware for cameras? Indeed. Itโ€™s not the only new thing, though. There is the battery, a 6,000 mAh monster housed in a 7.9 mm thin phone. Witchcraft? Most likely.

How does a 6,000 mAh battery perform in practical applications? Are the cameras good enough? What features does the realme 14 Pro+ have that the 13 Pro+ does not? Letโ€™s analyze every aspect of this review.

Realme 14 Pro+ Review: Box Content

First, let us discuss the realme 14 Pro+โ€™s unpacking experience. When you first open the package, you will see an insert. Inside, there is an opaque black casing, a SIM ejector tool, and the typical papers.

Below that is the realme 14 Pro+ itself. Further investigation reveals an 80W charger (Type-A; it should have been Type-C at this point) as well as a Type-A to Type-C USB charging cable. And thatโ€™s about itโ€”simple and uncomplicated.

Realme 14 Pro+ Review: Design & Build

Realme-14-Pro-Review-Design-Build

Letโ€™s discuss the realme 14 Pro+โ€™s design, which is perhaps its most distinctive feature. According to realme, itโ€™s the first color-changing, color-sensitive phone ever made (Pearl White). The phoneโ€™s ability to change color below 16ยฐC is a neat trick, but it feels more like a gimmick than a useful selling factor.

Indiaโ€™s environment is primarily tropical and humid, therefore itโ€™s unlikely that youโ€™ll see this function in use very often. Furthermore, donโ€™t expect the color-changing function to remain forever because the thermochromic fiber used for this effect will gradually deteriorate with continued usage.

If you want exclusivity, the Pearl White version is a wonderful option since it stands out with a distinct texture on the rear that varies from phone to phone. Furthermore, the phone can withstand freshwater dips because it has an IP68/69 rating.

The other colors are Suede Grey, Jaipur Pink, and Bikaner Purple, which looks great. The final one is made of vegan leather and has an extra layer of sleeves for durability. Suede Grey is somewhat heavier at 196g and thicker at 8.29mm, whilst Pearl White and Bikaner Purple weigh 194g and are 7.9mm thick.

The phone has a curved, comfortable-to-hold design and is ergonomic and thin. However, a case is advised since the Pearl White variantโ€™s shiny frame is prone to scratches.

Realme 14 Pro+ Review: Design & Build

The device comes with a pre-installed screen protector, allowing you to use it right away. The buttons are well-placed and provide good tactile feel when pressed.

The top has a secondary loudspeaker and microphone, while the bottom has another mic, a twin nano-SIM tray, a USB 2.0 port, and the primary loudspeaker. The volume rockers and power button are located on the left.

Overall, the Realme 14 Pro+ looks nice, but it is not without flaws.

Realme 14 Pro+ Review: Display

Realme 14 Pro+ Review: Display

The realme 14 Pro+ has a large 6.83-inch OLED quad-curve display with a 42ยฐ curvature, thin 1.6mm bezels, and a 93.8% screen-to-body ratio. It looks and feels unexpectedly excellent, due to its small bezels and soft edges, making it easy to handle.

The resolution is 2800 x 1272 (1.5K) with 450 PPI, which provides a clear viewing experience. The display is 100% DCI-P3 color gamut, has great contrast, and reaches a peak brightness of 1500 nits. And, sure, it is clearly visible even in sunlight.

In case youโ€™re wondering, it also has Gorilla Glass 7i protection and a centered punch-hole for the camera. The 3840 Hz PWM dimming reduces eye strain during lengthy usage, which is a good addition.

While the display appears amazing with its brilliant colors and realistic color profile, the refresh rate isnโ€™t perfect. There is a slight lag while scrolling, which might be corrected. Despite this, the 1.5K resolution produces clean and vivid graphics, making it one of the best displays in its class.

Realme 14 Pro+ Review: Sound Quality

The realme 14 Pro+ has a dual speaker setup that is adequate but not remarkable. While they get the job done, the volume might have been improved.

On the other hand, the haptics are excellent: tactile and well-integrated. Typing is gratifying, with responsive vibration feedback that enhances the whole experience.

Realme 14 Pro+ Review: Software

Realme 14 Pro+ Review: Software

The realme 14 Pro+ runs Android 15 with realme UI 6.0, providing a visually pleasing experience with several customization possibilities. You receive Flux themes (some animated words are not accessible), a configurable lock screen, and app organizing capabilities, however certain animated themes are presently unavailable.

Realme-14-Pro-Review-Software

Overall, the UI works well, although there are some hitches, such as micro-jitters, occasional slowness, and RAM management difficulties. In some apps, such as Twitter and WhatsApp, the auto mode does not correctly support 120 Hz scrolling, however switching to 120 Hz mode resolves this (usually).

Realme-14-Pro-Review-Software

In terms of bloatware, there is some pre-installed trash, like the new โ€œAppHubโ€ that may automatically install apps, which can be turned off in the settings. In addition, advertising will appear in global search, however they may be blocked. Then thereโ€™s the typical bloatware, which can easily be removed or disabled.

Realme-14-Pro-Review-Software

On a more positive side, the program incorporates valuable AI tools such as Circle to Search, Gemini, and the AI Eraser into the Gallery app. Touch sensitivity features such as Touch Adaptation and Waterproof Pouch Mode are useful enhancements. However, features such as Air Gestures feel like gimmicks and do not perform as effectively as intended.

Realme-14-Pro-Review-Software

The โ€œAIโ€ Smart Loop and AI Screen Recognition capabilities are also available. However, I have a concern about the AI Smart Loop: it frequently activates even when I am only attempting to pause a reel on Instagram, which is really aggravating. As a result, I usually kept it turned off.

Realme-14-Pro-Review-Software

Also, itโ€™s wonderful to see Realme releasing Android 15, especially since several rivals are still shipping mid-range handsets with Android 14. The software update strategy offers two years of OS upgrades and three years of security updates, but the overall experience, although satisfactory, may benefit from better performance in subsequent updates.

Realme 14 Pro+ Review: Fingerprint and Connectivity

Realme 14 Pro+ Review: Fingerprint and Connectivity

The fingerprint reader is optical, fast, and safe, albeit it should have been situated somewhat higher for easy access. Aside from that, it works well, and what about the 2D face unlock? You and I both know it.

The gadget handles connection effectively, with dual SIM compatibility, both of which are capable of 5G. It supports Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2, however Bluetooth 5.4 would have been a better option. There is no NFC functionality, and the USB Type-C connector is 2.0.

Realme 14 Pro+ Review: Performance

Realme 14 Pro+ Review: Performance

The realme 14 Pro+ has a Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 processor with 1x 2.5GHz, 3x 2.4GHz, and 4x 1.8GHz cores. This is combined with 8/12 GB of LPDDR4X memory and 128/256 GB of UFS 3.1 storage.

As you can undoubtedly guess, this phone isnโ€™t exactly blazing fast. It offers respectable performance for the budget, but it is not designed for intense gaming or demanding tasks.

Synthetic Benchmarks

The realme 14 Pro+ achieved 822,546 in the AnTuTu V10 test, and its AnTuTu Storage score of 109,921 indicates good read and write speeds. The Geekbench 6 CPU test yielded a single-core score of 1,179 and a multi-core score of 3,214.

Geekbench 6โ€™s CPU OpenCL and Vulkan scores were 3360 and 3958, respectively. In 3DMark Wild Life Extreme, the gadget earned 1,077 points. The Stress Test produced a maximum loop score of 1,080 and a minimum loop score of 1,074, with a stability of 99.4%.

The CPU throttling test revealed that the phone maintains 82% of its maximum performance under prolonged loads, which is satisfactory but provides space for improvement.

Gaming Experience

When it comes to gaming, the realme 14 Pro+ performs well. For casual gaming, it works nicely, with titles like BGMI running well. You wonโ€™t feel much latency, which is ideal for a smoother experience. BGMI is presently running at 60 FPS, however realme has promised to add support for 90 FPS shortly.

When it comes to more demanding titles like Genshin Impact, the game plays well, although you may notice occasional frame rate reductions, particularly at High settings. On High settings, I received an average FPS of roughly 50, which is acceptable but do not anticipate a buttery smooth experience. Take a look at the statistics below.

Gaming Experience

Overall, the device performs a good job at keeping a consistent frame rate without causing severe thermal concerns, even during extended gaming sessions. The highest temperature was around 40ยฐC, which is within permissible standards.

However, the realme 14 Pro+ reaches its limits in more intensive games such as CarX Street, and while the BGMI 90 FPS upgrade is planned for the future, it is not yet available. So, if youโ€™re a dedicated player, you might want to keep your expectations in check, but itโ€™s enough for regular gaming.

Realme 14 Pro+ Review: Cameras

Realme 14 Pro+ Review: Cameras

Main Camera

Realme 14 Pro+ Review: Cameras Realme 14 Pro+ Review: Cameras

However, the photographs may benefit from more vibrant color processing, especially in browns and greens, which sometimes seem flat. HDR is adequate but requires work in both daylight and low-light conditions.

Noise reduction might also be improved. Night mode allows for a maximum exposure of 5 seconds (which cannot be altered manually). Aside from that, the primary camera performs well.

Ultra-wide

The 8 MP ultra-wide camera, with its 112-degree field of view and f/2.2 aperture, is suitable for daytime shooting. Details in the middle are crisp, while the edges diminish dramatically.

Low-light performance is short, making this lens less suitable for darker conditions. Furthermore, chromatic aberration is visible while shooting against strong light, affecting overall image quality.

Ultra-wide

Macro

The realme 14 Pro+ lacks a specialized macro sensor or telemacro, therefore macro photography is not its strong point. The gadget employs the primary lens in auto-macro mode, however the photos are too crisp and lacking subtlety.

Periscope

A telephoto camera with 3X optical zoom stands out as a feature, providing fine details and superb HDR performance. Periscope cameras are uncommon at this pricing point. You may zoom in on portraits or to improve composition.

However, the level of sharpness might appear overwhelming at times (especially with 6X), and the color profile deviates slightlyโ€”but not significantlyโ€”from the primary lens. Thereโ€™s also 120X zoom, which is boosted by AI, although the results arenโ€™t really impressive.

Portraits

Portraits taken with the back and selfie cameras are outstanding. Edge detection is good (usually), and skin tones appear realistic. However, backlit circumstances can occasionally produce haze, which reduces overall clarity.

Selfies

A 32 MP sensor handles selfies and is adaptable with 0.8X to 1X zoom choices (21mm and 25mm equivalent). The 25mm setting is ideal for single-person photos.

Special Modes

Creative modes like AI Snap freeze moving subjects effectively but are limited to 1X and 3X zoom levels.

Special Modes

The Live Photo mode records 1.5 seconds before and after hitting the shutter, resulting in a brief 1080p video clip that may be saved as a movie or GIF if desired. When you enable Live Photo, the quality of your images suffers.

Triple Torch

The triple LED flash in the back allows you to alter the temperature, offering cooler or warmer tones. You can even control the brightness of the torch. However, it feels more gimmicky than effective, and it does not provide the gentle focus that one would anticipate. So I would advise you to avoid using it unless absolutely necessary.

Videos

The primary camera and telephoto lens can record videos in 4K30 resolution, but the ultra-wide lens can only record in 1080p30. The overall video quality in 4K30 is acceptable, however the stability is variable. This becomes much more noticeable while filming with the 3X lens.

The Ultra Steady mode at 1080p60 produces smoother results, however it is confined to the primary lens. Selfie videos in 4K30 are excellent in terms of resolution and brightness, but stability and background exposure might be problematic. Other video capabilities include a โ€œfilm modeโ€ with customized settings and a 21:9 aspect ratio, however the resolution is restricted to 1080p30.

In conclusion, the realme 14 Pro+ provides a satisfactory camera experience with a few notable features. However, it has some consistency issues, which should be resolved by an OTA update. The portraits on the Realme 14 Pro+ are great, and if you want a gadget that can do it, this is the one to have.

Realme 14 Pro+ Review: Battery

Battery

The battery life of the Realme 14 Pro+ has been extremely excellent. It has a 6000 mAh silicon-carbon battery based on lithium-ion technology in a 7.99mm thin housing. This is impressive, considering such a slim design with a huge battery is uncommon.

In terms of screen time, I was getting around 8-9 hours with moderate usage and roughly 6 hours with severe usage, which is fairly satisfactory. I typically use my phone in light mode, so people that utilize dark mode may get somewhat longer battery life.

The realme 14 Pro+ also supports 80W rapid charging, with a charger supplied in the package. Charging times are reasonable, taking roughly an hour to completely charge and 25-30 minutes for a 50% charge, which is close to the brandโ€™s 24-minute estimate. Nonetheless, with a 6000 mAh battery, charging times remain consistent.

Pros

  • Slim design despite a 6,000 mAh battery
  • 1.5K OLED display with 1500 Nits
  • 3X periscope telephoto
  • IP68/69 rating
  • Good battery life
  • Fast 80W charging
  • Good selfie camera
  • Stereo speakers
  • Android 15 out of the box

Cons

  • Minor scrolling lag
  • Pre-installed bloatware and ads
  • Limited performance for demanding games
  • Ultra-wide camera needs improvement
  • No NFC or IR blaster

Should You Buy the realme 14 Pro+?

Design and Build:ย 8/10

Display & Speakers:ย 8.5/10

Software:ย 7.5/10

Haptics:ย 8.5/10

Biometrics:ย 8/10

Performance:ย 7.5/10

Cameras:ย 7.5/10

The Realme 14 Pro+ is an interesting update. The 6,000 mAh battery is a game changer in a small form, and the 1.5K quad-curve OLED display is bright and clear. Plus, the color-changing back, while goofy, provides a distinct touch. At โ‚น27,999 (with deals), it is a terrific bargain.

However, the camera increase over the 13 Pro+ is minor, and gamers may feel that performance is constrained. If you want a no-compromise performance, the vivo T3 Ultra or Realmeโ€™s own GT 6T may be better options.
