Aadhaar

The deadline for updating Aadhaar has been extended again, however you cannot change all information for free

The UIDAI has extended the deadline for free Aadhaar upgrades to June 2025, allowing Indian individuals to amend their demographic information online.

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has again extended the deadline for free Aadhaar upgrades via its web portal, myAadhaar. Indian people can now change the information on their Aadhaar cards till June 14, 2025. The initial deadline for free Aadhaar updates was December 14; however, in order to guarantee that Aadhaar holders, particularly those who had not updated their information in over a decade, could do so, the government extended the deadline.

However, this free service is only accessible for online updates of demographic information such as name, date of birth, address, and cellphone number. To update biometrics such as fingerprints, iris scans, or pictures, Aadhaar holders must visit authorized Aadhaar centers and pay a minimal cost.

Notably, biometric updates are required for those whose biometrics have changed dramatically owing to aging, surgery, accidents, or other factors. This also applies to kids turning 15, whose biometrics must be updated to maintain data accuracy.

How to update Aadhaar online for free

If you wish to use the free online Aadhaar upgrading service:

  • Visit the myAadhaar portal.
  • Log in with your Aadhaar number and the OTP issued to your registered cellphone number.
  • ย Check and verify all of your Aadhaar information, including your name and address. If any modifications are required, proceed with the update.
  • To update, choose the appropriate document type (such as Proof of Identity or Address) and upload a clean scanned copy in JPEG, PNG, or PDF format (maximum file size: 2 MB).
  • Submit your update request and save the 14-digit Update Request Number (URN) for tracking.
  • Once approved, the updated Aadhaar card may be downloaded from the portal.

Why updating Aadhaar is important

UIDAI has frequently stressed the necessity of keeping Aadhaar information correct and up to date. Aadhaar, a 12-digit unique identity number provided by the Government of India, is required to access a variety of services and benefits, including enrollment in government assistance schemes, submitting income tax returns, purchasing transport tickets, and so on. Keeping comprehensive updates will allow you to maintain your identity evidence up to date.

Furthermore, continual updates to Aadhaar assure the accuracy of the information related to the Aadhaar bearer. This further decreases the likelihood of abuse, fraud, and identity-related issues. The UIDAI invites all Aadhaar holders, particularly those whose cards were issued more than a decade ago or minors over the age of 15, to take advantage of the extended deadline and update their information as soon as possible. With the free update window available until June 14, 2025, people are encouraged to examine their information and make any required changes online.
